The dream of studying in the United States remains strong for many international students. However, in a year filled with changes and headlines, it’s understandable that both students and parents have questions and concerns about the journey ahead.
Our recent Pre-Departure Townhall, featuring renowned experts Dr. Cheryl Matherly Vice President & Vice Provost of International Affairs Lehigh University, Jane Gatewood, Vice Provost for Emory University’s Global Engagement Office and Dr. Glen Besterfield, Dean of Enrollment Management, University of North Florida, aimed to answer key questions and concerns from both students and parents.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare for your studies in the USA in 2025!
The most important message from our experts is that very little has changed on US campuses for international students. The academic excellence and career opportunities remain as robust as ever. The primary practical change you might encounter is related to increased visa scrutiny. This highlights the responsibility of student visa holders to be focused on their studies and diligent in maintaining their student visa status.
Understanding the New Visa Guidance
Launched on June 18th when visa appointments resumed, the Expanded Screening Visa Guidance is a point of focus. It’s more important than ever that students are focused on their academic and career goals, and can speak effectively about those long-term plans. While Dr. Besterfield notes, “We don’t know 100% what they are looking at,” he has collated a list of potential areas of scrutiny during visa interviews, based on available information:
- Social media content expressing hostility toward the United States of America.
- Political activism.
- Anti-semitic harassment.
- Pro-terrorism content.
Implementing these steps for expanded screening may impact visa appointment wait times. Students can refer to Travel.State.Gov’s Global Visa Waittimes to explore available appointments in other accessible consulates, such as Dubai or Malaysia.
Beyond visa guidance, our panelists covered a range of important topics:
- Impact of Current Events: While headlines about affirmative action, global conflicts, and the 2024 election create “theatre,” the only practical change for international students is tied to visa appointments. Study and research grants, and even campus protest allowances, have not been significantly affected.
- Campus Viewpoint: From a university perspective, “nothing has really changed.” International students are incredibly valuable for fostering global citizens among domestic students.
- Enduring Appeal of US Education: The core reasons students are drawn to the USA—quality education, practical knowledge, and opportunities like OPT/STEM extensions—remain unchanged.
- Institutional Support: Universities are deeply committed to ensuring international students feel safe, welcome, and have clear information. They offer robust structures to help you maintain compliance, provide accurate updates, and support you through changes like travel bans (which primarily impact those not yet in the US).
- Travel Bans and Deferrals: If you are already in the US, travel bans have less impact. However, students should always inquire with their institutions about how they plan to assist them in completing their degree. Universities also provide guidance on deferrals or delays.
- Visa Appointments: Currently, wait times in India are approximately 1-2 months.
- OPT/CPT: These crucial programs are federal law and continue to be “alive and well.”
- Job Market: Strong economies are integrated with US institutions. For example, Jacksonville, Florida, is a thriving market for fintech and AI. Opportunities are available, and businesses are still hiring top international talent, though students should be strategic about their major.
- Safety: Students are advised to be aware of their surroundings and act smartly. Universities generally reside in safe neighborhoods, but it’s always wise to research the specific community where you will be living.
- Purpose of Study: Remember, you are in the US to study. Focus on maintaining your student status, and always consider your university as the best source for accurate information.
Now is the time to finalise your preparations. Double-check your documents, understand your university’s orientation schedule, and get ready for an incredible educational journey. Being well-prepared will ensure a smooth transition and a successful start to your studies in the USA!
