Back in 2019, when the Graduate Route visa was introduced, it was welcomed with enthusiastic support from various sectors, with stakeholders expressing that it would enhance the appeal of the UK as a study destination. This resulted in a substantial increase in enrollments from India, soaring from 25,000 to approximately 140,000 student visas issued last year, marking a historic high.
A significant portion, around 70-75%, of the students cites the opportunity to work in the UK after their studies as a key factor influencing their decision to pursue education in the country.
However, the recent policy change, which revoked the right to bring dependents on postgraduate taught courses, triggered a drastic 40% decline in enrollments in January 2024. Additionally, the ongoing review of the Graduate Route Visa is aggravating the waning interest among students for the UK, significantly impacting demand.
It’s imperative for the government to adopt a more sustainable approach to maintain the UK’s attractiveness as a destination for international students and to develop immigration policies that are fair and equitable. International students not only contribute to the economy but also enrich the experience for all involved.
